Self Care in a Selfish World

Hey there! As I was setting up my blog and pondering what my first post would be about, I had to ask myself 'why' I wanted to start blogging on this platform in the first place. I've had several blogs in the past. Some dedicated to beauty, lifestyle, fashion--but in the long run they never stuck, or felt like 'me'. I love blogging and reading other blogs, but if I planned to blog again at any capacity I needed to find my 'why' and also my passion. So, what am I passionate about? In this current season of my life, I am a SAHM/Homemaker. I've been married nearly 6 years to my husband Josh and I stay home to take care of our 20 month old daughter, Leighton. I am passionate about pursuing a relationship with Jesus, being a good wife/mommy and keeping the home a haven and peaceful environment. So, I'm starting with the basics. What makes me the best version of the above? I'm sure we've all heard of the words 'self care' in recent years. It seems to have exploded and become something people feel as though they 'deserve'. I think self care is a tool to make me my best for others. If I don't take care of myself, feel my best and get enough rest then I cannot be my best for my family. I think it boils down to choosing yourself, even in the few nap time minutes when your toddler isn't in sleep refusal mode, so that you can unwind and be better for your family. So what does my self care look like? Some days it's choosing to nap while my toddler naps. Lately, the night time sleep schedule has been disrupted by teething and ear aches and my temper is so much shorter when I'm not well rested. I know after even a 15 minute restful nap I will be so much happier and a better wife and mom if I choose to leave the living room a mess and lay down for a bit. Another way to care for myself is a long hot shower once my husband gets home from work. Typically I will have dinner ready and after we have all eaten I will slip away for a shower while my husband and daughter have some bonding time through playing. Something I'm working on in this season is taking the time to do my hair and makeup. It doesn't happen daily, but I would love for it to become a normal routine. Some days (more often than not) I'm still in my pajamas once my husband returns home. The days that I style my hair and apply even simple, natural makeup I feel so much better and am more likely to make more eye contact and smile more when my husband tells me about his day. I recently had my hair highlighted and although it pained me a bit to spend the money on something that seemed so menial, It really has encouraged me to style my hair and spend the time to fix myself up a bit. What does your 'self care' routine look like? Are you in the same season of wife/mommyhood? I would love to hear what helps you be a better wife and mom in the comments!

Single Serving Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I had a few hours to myself today and decided to search for a good single serving chocolate chip cookie recipe. I found one by cookingclassy.com and thankfully it turned out so great! It was similar to the taste and size of Crumbl Cookies chocolate chip cookie (they are my favorite!) The dough is a very crumbly consistency so I recommend once you have your baking sheet lined with parchment paper to just dump it on top and form it into a large disc. I had a hard time trying to get the dough to come together so I opted to do this instead. See the recipe below! Ingredients: 2 TBSP butter (I used unsalted) 3 TBSP packed light-brown sugar. 1 pinch of salt. 1 TBSP whisked egg (crack egg in bowl and mix up well then scoop out 1 TBSP and add to your bowl.) 1/4 tsp vanilla. 1/3 cup all purpose flour. 1/8 tsp baking soda. 3-4 TBSP chocolate chips.  Recipe: Melt butter in microwave until only a little left is unmelted. mix together so that all is melted. Place butter in fridge to cool s...

Banana Bread Recipe

When it comes to banana bread I prefer less sweet. I've also realized I'm not a fan of adding chocolate chips to my banana bread--the flavors don't blend well to me! This banana bread is just sweet enough and really yummy with blueberries. A tip I've found helpful is to coat your blueberries in a small amount of flour before folding into the batter. It keeps them from sinking to the bottom.  Here is our favorite banana bread recipe! Ingredients: 3 ripe bananas, mashed. 1 cup sugar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 cup melted butter 1 egg 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 cup blueberries or your choice of add-in. Recipe: Preheat oven to 325* and grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan. Mix bananas, sugar, butter and egg in large bowl. Mix flour and baking soda in separate bowl. Add flour mixture to banana mixture and mix until well combined. Add salt and mix well.  If folding in blueberries, add a small amount of flour to berries and then add to bowl, folding until well distributed. Bak...
