This week we learned all about apples in our tot school lessons. The week ended with us going to an apple festival about 40 minutes away. She had a blast and the week was so fun!
We worked on graduated order with different sizes of apples. We did both large to small and small to large. This was pretty easy for her but she really enjoyed it. We also did a prewriting activity by drawing lines to match objects.
She has really been liking shapes and tracing them so I drew out some shapes for her to trace and name.
A few activities we included this week was a simple apple sensory bin for her to construct an 'apple pie' and a 'Ten Apples Up on Top' activity which turned out be so fun. We read the book (which is really funny) and then cut out photos of family along with small apples for her to glue. She chose how many for each person and we counted them all out and put them on top of our heads like in the book.
We did a color match activity by drawing an apple tree and adding yellow, green and red dot stickers. We added play dough 'apple' balls to another tree and counted them out as we went. We are focusing on having objects to count since it is so easy to just memorize numbers instead of applying them to objects.
There were a few good apple videos on YouTube for preschoolers. We found a video that showed an orchard with different types of apples. Leighton realized she was eating a gala apple as she watched and it was fun to watch her wheels start to turn about how her apple came to be in our home.
A photo of our library check outs from this week (some we already owned). They were so helpful and I'm glad I took note of which ones we loved so that we can revisit them in the future.
We have read through 'Apples' by Gail Gibbons in the past and ate an apple while we learned the parts, so she wasn't as interested in this activity this time around but it was a good refresher and she also remembered all names of the parts. Skin, fleshy part, seeds, core, stem, carpals.
We fit a library visit into our week and she has been loving being a big girl and watching some educational videos at the library. I always reserve our books ahead of time so I can just grab them in a bundle and then browse movies (which are directly behind her). She likes to ask for her own craft packets and stickers which I encourage so she grows bolder in speaking for herself.
Our week ended in Lincoln, AR. at their apple festival. We met our close friends who live there and walked around. While it wasn't as apple centered as we hoped (mostly craft booths) we had a blast and tried apple items including her first apple cider (which she loved). Did you know it takes 40 apples to make a gallon of apple cider?
They also had an apple peeling and coring station on a stage with free slices. Leighton said 'I don't like green apples.' I don't blame you, Sister.
With heart from our home,
Jordan
