Grocery Prices Rising + Budget Math

I love budget math. This would have shocked the junior year me who stayed afloat in Algebra 2 by having a tutor and extra meeting hours with my teacher.

But (maybe) because my desire to do well for our family by budgeting, keeping us on track with our financial goals and continuing our debt free journey, I've come to love budgeting/household finances.

This includes budgeting for household items, groceries, etc. If you've been to the grocery store recently then you know grocery prices are rising. Bacon at Aldi has now reached above $4. We'll be having breakfast sausage for awhile.

So it's very easy for our household to question whether shopping at the grocery store is worth it with the price increases, or should we order take out a few times a week? Are those prices comparable?

I wanted to share our breakdown of price per meal and per serving for our family. Breaking the numbers down this way is so beneficial to staying on track with budgeting, even with adding $20/week for groceries.

We were sticking to $100/week to try and really cut costs while paying off debt and I shared a post about Shelf Cooking which you can find HERE. With the rising prices this just wasn't feasible and we often had to add in a second grocery store trip during the weekend to stock back up on a few things.

If you've had to add on extra funds to your grocery budget, you're not alone!

Even with $20 extra, the price per person to eat in our household is incredibly low--here's the breakdown.

Weekly grocery budget: $120.

Divided by 7 days/ week: $17.14/ day.

Divided by 3 people in our household: $5.71 per person per day.

Divided by 3 meals per day: $1.90.

So based on this math, each of us in our home eats $1.90/ meal. Much cheaper than eating out! And we eat well. We're not on a beans and rice diet in our home. We've learned to look for sales and stock up on meat when we can, but we eat nutritious and filling meals. This number shocked me and also shocked Josh when I shared it with him. Great perspective and also reassuring when having to add to your grocery fund.

I hope this is helpful!

With heart from our home,

Jordan

Single Serving Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I had a few hours to myself today and decided to search for a good single serving chocolate chip cookie recipe. I found one by cookingclassy.com and thankfully it turned out so great! It was similar to the taste and size of Crumbl Cookies chocolate chip cookie (they are my favorite!) The dough is a very crumbly consistency so I recommend once you have your baking sheet lined with parchment paper to just dump it on top and form it into a large disc. I had a hard time trying to get the dough to come together so I opted to do this instead. See the recipe below! Ingredients: 2 TBSP butter (I used unsalted) 3 TBSP packed light-brown sugar. 1 pinch of salt. 1 TBSP whisked egg (crack egg in bowl and mix up well then scoop out 1 TBSP and add to your bowl.) 1/4 tsp vanilla. 1/3 cup all purpose flour. 1/8 tsp baking soda. 3-4 TBSP chocolate chips.  Recipe: Melt butter in microwave until only a little left is unmelted. mix together so that all is melted. Place butter in fridge to cool s...

Banana Bread Recipe

When it comes to banana bread I prefer less sweet. I've also realized I'm not a fan of adding chocolate chips to my banana bread--the flavors don't blend well to me! This banana bread is just sweet enough and really yummy with blueberries. A tip I've found helpful is to coat your blueberries in a small amount of flour before folding into the batter. It keeps them from sinking to the bottom.  Here is our favorite banana bread recipe! Ingredients: 3 ripe bananas, mashed. 1 cup sugar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 cup melted butter 1 egg 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 cup blueberries or your choice of add-in. Recipe: Preheat oven to 325* and grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan. Mix bananas, sugar, butter and egg in large bowl. Mix flour and baking soda in separate bowl. Add flour mixture to banana mixture and mix until well combined. Add salt and mix well.  If folding in blueberries, add a small amount of flour to berries and then add to bowl, folding until well distributed. Bak...
