All About Me & Emotions Units| Weeks 10, 11, 12

The week we are currently in of tot school (week 12) was listed as 'family unit', but when I checked my folder I didn't have any worksheets or plans prepared for it. So, I used this week as a sort of catch up and prolonged the All About Me and Emotions week units.

We had several worksheets for these 2 units and she really liked naming all body parts. I cut the names out, but she glued and placed them. She loves taking ownership of that process!

Her tracing skills have dramatically improved. At first I thought it just wasn't a skill she enjoyed or was really catching onto (we still have our moments) but her focus has increased and she is trying so hard at drawing right on top of the numbers and letters. It helps to draw a big dot where she should begin tracing, otherwise she isn't certain where to start.

I printed out two pages that showed emotions/feelings and facial expressions and throughout the week had her point to the emotion she was feeling. She nearly always chose 'happy' so I tried to remind her that any emotion and feeling is okay and would say 'I'm EXCITED to be learning with you.' or something along those lines to show how to state feelings.

We got out her chalk/magnet board and I wrote the letters she now can identify and sound out (6 of them), along with some numbers to trace and shapes. I've noticed it helps to switch up our set up, though she does like the predictability of learning on the floor with mama.

Stand out books for this week included What If I Know My Feelings by Michelle Nelson-Schmidt and The Busy Body Book by Lizzy Rockwell.

Our weeks also included a trip to our hometown where we visited my mom at her library (and played in the super awesome children's section), a Paw Patrol themed birthday party to celebrate a friend's 4th birthday, a handful of fall nature walks where we talked about all the colors of fall (and found some gorgeous ombre fall leaves) as well as a trip to our local Nature Center (free admission!)

She had gone to the Nature Center once before with us but she truly loved this last visit and we had the place to ourselves to really explore. She's asked to go back soon. I referred to it as a 'Field Trip' and she thought that was so exciting and special and told her daddy she went on a field trip as soon as he got home that day.

We ended our field trip with eating snacks at a picnic table, walking their cemented trail and viewing the archery course (animals) on our walk back. I also let her throw 2 pennies in the fountain and stomp in a puddle on our way out.

An activity she's really taken to is using playdoh as a base, putting various lengths of spaghetti noodles in it and then placing buttons or cheerios on the noodles until they're stacked. It's a great quiet/busy activity that develops motor skills.

Our week of course included a trip to the library (obsessed with this photo) and I was able to snatch up several great Thanksgiving books much to my surprise! I am SO excited about next weeks Thanksgiving unit and typically libraries are out of holiday themed books closer to the actual holiday. We aren't Halloween fans besides simple activities so Thanksgiving is our first tot school holiday to really celebrate.

Single Serving Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I had a few hours to myself today and decided to search for a good single serving chocolate chip cookie recipe. I found one by cookingclassy.com and thankfully it turned out so great! It was similar to the taste and size of Crumbl Cookies chocolate chip cookie (they are my favorite!) The dough is a very crumbly consistency so I recommend once you have your baking sheet lined with parchment paper to just dump it on top and form it into a large disc. I had a hard time trying to get the dough to come together so I opted to do this instead. See the recipe below! Ingredients: 2 TBSP butter (I used unsalted) 3 TBSP packed light-brown sugar. 1 pinch of salt. 1 TBSP whisked egg (crack egg in bowl and mix up well then scoop out 1 TBSP and add to your bowl.) 1/4 tsp vanilla. 1/3 cup all purpose flour. 1/8 tsp baking soda. 3-4 TBSP chocolate chips.  Recipe: Melt butter in microwave until only a little left is unmelted. mix together so that all is melted. Place butter in fridge to cool s...

Banana Bread Recipe

When it comes to banana bread I prefer less sweet. I've also realized I'm not a fan of adding chocolate chips to my banana bread--the flavors don't blend well to me! This banana bread is just sweet enough and really yummy with blueberries. A tip I've found helpful is to coat your blueberries in a small amount of flour before folding into the batter. It keeps them from sinking to the bottom.  Here is our favorite banana bread recipe! Ingredients: 3 ripe bananas, mashed. 1 cup sugar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 cup melted butter 1 egg 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 cup blueberries or your choice of add-in. Recipe: Preheat oven to 325* and grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan. Mix bananas, sugar, butter and egg in large bowl. Mix flour and baking soda in separate bowl. Add flour mixture to banana mixture and mix until well combined. Add salt and mix well.  If folding in blueberries, add a small amount of flour to berries and then add to bowl, folding until well distributed. Bak...
