Construction Week| Tot School Week 2

If you're interested in what tot school is for us, read HERE for explanation and schedule.

This week we finished up week 2 of tot school--Construction Week! Truthfully, Leighton knows a lot about construction vehicles and often points out 'cement mixers' and 'rollers' during our weekly outings.

We also live right next to a construction site which has every construction truck one could possibly need parked throughout the week, which helps with learning the names and parts of them.

This week our stand out books included Roadwork by Sally Sutton, Construction Site on Christmas Night by Sherri Duskey Rinker, Construction Countdown by K.C. Olson and Construction Kitties by Judy Sue Goodwin Sturges. We worked on identifying parts of a book such as 'front cover, back cover and spine'. Also that the author writes the words and the illustrator creates the pictures.

I search popular preschool books for each theme on Google, screen shot them and then search them at our library. If they have them, great! If not I just search key words and add them to reserves so I can pick them up in a bundle without worrying about finding them with Leighton in tow. Much easier to pick them up at the circulation desk and search for miscellaneous books that interest her when we are there.

While we were at the library this past week, Leighton used the iPads to watch ABC Mouse Learning videos and learned to navigate the Home Screen herself (by touching each video after one ended). This meant I was able to search movies/ books within eye shot of her sitting and doing her program.

She has also been so confident when approaching adults lately. Handing packages at the post office, saying 'thank you' after encounters and clearly stating her name when asked. She approached Miss Kristen at our library and asked for craft packets. She was given several, along with stickers and a book mark that states when you read a certain amount of books you get a free Raising Canes meal.

We supplemented our learning with some of the library packets through the week. I highly suggest asking your children's librarian if they have such packets at your local library--even just to have on hand for a rainy day!

Here are some activities we did this week. a 3D Sculpture art project. She glued the entire thing herself and I helped with placement. She's doing really well with a glue bottle. I'm working on teaching her proper amounts to squeeze out and how to spread it around if she gets too much in one spot. I've also seen some moms put the glue in a cup and give a small paint brush to spread it out. We used her Preschool work book a lot. She's loving shapes and tracing right now. The string art project was another library craft but I added contact paper. I purchased a few items to create a construction sensory bin from the Dollar Tree; Stone, brown paper, some construction vehicles and a building. I quickly hand drew and cut out a construction worker, traffic cone and bulldozer for her to color and glue together, thank you, Pinterest. Also, have you seen a cuter dinosaur or princess? Lots of dress up time happening lately!

The beads and pipecleaner she received from the library were a hit. It kept her very focused and busy. She even made me a bracelet which I will cherish forever.

Our themed worksheets included a 'do a dot' truck and some prewriting.

We found a fun 'construction' themed song on Pinterest that she liked and we sang it a couple times during the week. If you search certain preschool themes, there are tons of songs on Pinterest to help promote a theme or even promote action along with song to get wiggles out.

Our Bible learning has been reading a few stories from her Bible each evening, acting out Jonah and the whale & revisiting her church videos each Wednesday or Thursday evening. Her memory verse this month is ‘We have the LORD our God to help us.” 2 Chronicles 32:8. She’s recited it for grandparents and has it down.

We really enjoyed this week--even after starting late due to a long weekend and trying to get our apartment back in order!

With heart from our home,

Jordan

Single Serving Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I had a few hours to myself today and decided to search for a good single serving chocolate chip cookie recipe. I found one by cookingclassy.com and thankfully it turned out so great! It was similar to the taste and size of Crumbl Cookies chocolate chip cookie (they are my favorite!) The dough is a very crumbly consistency so I recommend once you have your baking sheet lined with parchment paper to just dump it on top and form it into a large disc. I had a hard time trying to get the dough to come together so I opted to do this instead. See the recipe below! Ingredients: 2 TBSP butter (I used unsalted) 3 TBSP packed light-brown sugar. 1 pinch of salt. 1 TBSP whisked egg (crack egg in bowl and mix up well then scoop out 1 TBSP and add to your bowl.) 1/4 tsp vanilla. 1/3 cup all purpose flour. 1/8 tsp baking soda. 3-4 TBSP chocolate chips.  Recipe: Melt butter in microwave until only a little left is unmelted. mix together so that all is melted. Place butter in fridge to cool s...

Meatloaf Muffins Recipe

This recipe is served well because of the smaller portions and ease of transfer. No cutting into a big loaf and hoping it cooked all the way through!  This is a very basic meatloaf recipe and I found the original on Every Day Mom's Meals , though I've changed it up quite a bit to fit our family.  See recipe below! Ingredients: 2 lbs ground beef 2 eggs, beaten 1 green bell pepper, diced 1 cup plain bread crumbs salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup ketchup + extra to top muffins 2 TBSP Worcestershire sauce Recipe: Preheat oven to 350. Spray muffin tin with non stick spray and set aside. In large bowl mix all ingredients well (I use my hands to make sure it's thorough) Fill each muffin tin with some meat mixture, leaving about a half inch from top empty so it doesn't overflow while cooking.  Take your ketchup and squirt a bit on top of each muffin. Bake for 25 minutes at 350. After time is up, heat oven to 400 and continue baking for 10-15 more minutes. This makes the top and ...
