The last 2 weeks we have learned about various occupations. If you're interested in doing a unit about occupations I recommend searching 'Community Helpers Preschool Activities' on Pinterest.
I was able to find a free printable resource of many different hats to color/decorate and then cut and construct. Since there were many, we only crafted a few and I put a few in other unit folders (Such as the chef hat for our baking unit, etc.)
We worked on prewriting and printed out this cute matching puzzle thanks to Home Grown Learning Co's freebies.
We watched THIS Youtube video about Community Helpers for a visual aid.
Perhaps the most exciting thing about this unit was receiving letters from friends and family telling Leighton about the work they do and what they enjoy most about their jobs.
After we read each letter she was interested in acting out the job they described. If we revisit this unit next year I hope to have more items prepared for better dramatic play. This year we used what we already had or supplemented the topic with books.
The benefit of asking your local library for craft packets is they often fit certain homeschool themes. We have a few stashed away for future units and we pulled out this doctor craft after reading our letter from a doctor friend. He also sent Skye (Paw Patrol) Baindaids which were used on Bear Bear.
We also received letters from a teacher, baker, event planner, mail carrier, librarian and a speech language pathologist.
A friend from high school who is now a cake decorator sent Leighton a letter and cute stickers. Leighton had already opened a pack before I took a photo. She also enjoyed decorating the cover of her card!
Playing 'School' with her caboodle and new school supplies from my close friend Shianne.
Stand out books this week included various occupation books by Julie Murray and 'Keeping Us Healthy' a an Usborne book that we own.
Her memory verse this month is "We have the Lord our God to help us." 2 Chronicles 32:8. She will have a new memory verse this coming week for the month of October.
She is still loving Jonah and the Whale, Daniel and the Lions Den and David and Goliath. We watched these stories on Beginner Bible's YouTube Channel and read them in her Bible. She also played 'Noah's ark' on her bed by bringing her stuffed animals on the 'ark'.
Tucking her animals in on the ark.
Some non-themed work we did was working on our shapes and identifying the trickier shapes like square verses rectangle, diamond verses rhombus. I drew them on her chalkboard and we counted the sides of the shapes and also worked through a set of flash cards with shapes and colors from the Dollar Tree.
We have been using the ABC See Hear Do work book to learn the sounds of letters. It suggests teaching early learners the sound a letter makes rather than the name of the letter itself so it promotes early reading. We have learned A, C and T. It groups the sound along with an action, so even if she doesn't remember the sound I will do the action and she will then remember what the sound is.
I originally designated this unit for 2 weeks because I wanted to visit different offices and stations to really bring the unit to life. Since Covid has limited those options I saw another mama asking for letters to supplement their unit so I also went that route. It was such a fun touch to our weeks and she felt so special with letters addressed to her. I have put the letters in our binder and plan to read them again next year as well.
With heart from our home,
Jordan
