Library Fines & Laundry Piles

I typically keep up with laundry without it piling up TOO high. The days just haven't flowed well lately with Leighton coming down with a cold & trying to run errands, get dinner finished at a good time and clean around the rest of our apartment. Leighton's laundry hangs behind her door in a fabric bag which is such a space saver, but also it stays out of sight so it's easy to pile up. Ours is in a tall basket that sits on the washer behind two doors so that's easy to avoid as well. Until every one is out of basics, then it's laundry day regardless of schedule!

So today I'm catching up on about 4 loads of laundry, including sheets and towels. I don't mind laundry. For awhile I completely forgot about it after becoming a mom. It just wouldn't ever come to mind since I stayed in the same spit up covered nursing top and pajama pants, so Josh took that chore on as his own and I am grateful for that. Now he'll comment that he hasn't touched the laundry process in months and I'm happy about it.

I like to put on a podcast (likely Dave Ramsey or the Half Size Me podcast) while doing home chores. Especially cleaning the kitchen. It makes it a lot less of a burden and brings some joy to the process. I've seen other moms choose to have their fancy homemade coffee drinks during their least favorite chore and that makes it tolerable for them. I'm not sure I have a least favorite chore... possibly cleaning the shower/bathtub... but podcasts do make it all seem like a lighter load.

In other news, I checked my library account today because when I made a recent return I noticed that a book we checked out was warped. I couldn't remember if it had been that way before,  but swallowed hard when I returned it to the book drop. Low and behold, we have a $16 charge to replace the book. Those are very frustrating things while on a debt free journey! (or really at any point). We aren't careless in our actions i.e. I've never received a speeding ticket, I take good care of borrowed things, I remember return dates and appointment dates so I'm not charged a no show fee. But our library fines just seem to keep coming our way! My guess is it became warped by sitting close to Leighton's bedroom window and taking it some moisture on a rainy day. Her other books around it were fine so I don't believe any water was dropped onto it. We also had a $2 fine due to a Peppa Pig book having a torn page recently. I think Leighton got excited to turn it and it tore in the process. I try and renew books when they are coming close to being due if I know it's not looking good to make it to the library in time and recently, on the date several items were due, I renewed and it still charged me a day late fee.

It's all certainly our fault and we'll pay them, but we're taking a break from library check outs for awhile! We love the library, but not when it costs us a tank of gas to keep checking out books.

Today I have my annual wellness check up at my OB's office (who delivered Leighton) and afterward I plan to return any other library items we currently have and take a long hiatus from bringing anything else home.

Since we plan to start a round of tot school/home learning in the fall I hope to check thrift stores for books that go along with our themes and keep those on hand to learn from.

If they get torn or damaged in the process I'll mend them myself & save a heap in the process :)

Single Serving Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I had a few hours to myself today and decided to search for a good single serving chocolate chip cookie recipe. I found one by cookingclassy.com and thankfully it turned out so great! It was similar to the taste and size of Crumbl Cookies chocolate chip cookie (they are my favorite!) The dough is a very crumbly consistency so I recommend once you have your baking sheet lined with parchment paper to just dump it on top and form it into a large disc. I had a hard time trying to get the dough to come together so I opted to do this instead. See the recipe below! Ingredients: 2 TBSP butter (I used unsalted) 3 TBSP packed light-brown sugar. 1 pinch of salt. 1 TBSP whisked egg (crack egg in bowl and mix up well then scoop out 1 TBSP and add to your bowl.) 1/4 tsp vanilla. 1/3 cup all purpose flour. 1/8 tsp baking soda. 3-4 TBSP chocolate chips.  Recipe: Melt butter in microwave until only a little left is unmelted. mix together so that all is melted. Place butter in fridge to cool s...

Baking Unit | Tot School Week 15

Baking Unit wasn't as hands on as I had hoped, but we have another week of Christmas festivities to make up for that! We did several worksheets to practice prewriting skills and also decorated a cupcake chef hat! A simple sensory bin was made from oats and some kitchen tools I had on hand. She scooped the oats into the cupcake tins and made 'cupcakes'. The most exciting part of baking week was making gingerbread houses with Grandma. She mostly taste tested but was quite excited about building them! We got started on Christmas books early so didn't check out specific baking books, although a forever favorite of ours is Who At All the Cookie Dough? By Karen Beaumont. We look forward to more baking activities while celebrating the holidays. With heart from our home,  Jordan
